Le Grand Monde d'Andy Warhol

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

warholIn 1962 Warhol painted Marilyn Monroe and rival Liz Taylor. He was instantly hooked and, until his death in 1987, celebrity portraiture was an obsession. Le Grand Monde d’Andy Warhol at Paris’ Grand Palais explores his celebrity Pop Art world.
Alongside film and rock stars (Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Mick Jagger, Sly Stallone), you’ll find portraits of artists (Man Ray, David Hockney, Keith Haring), politicians (Willy Brandt, Edward Kennedy), fashion designers (Yves Saint-Laurent, Sonia Rykiel), businessmen and jetsetters (Princess Grace of Monaco, Gunther Sachs).

Best of all, the Grand Palais’ curators have scooped a sizeable selection from the thousand or so famous silkscreen prints Warhol created from Polaroids in his studio, The Factory. The series of prints, arranged according to theme (Self Portraits, Mao, The Last Supper) each focus on key points in Warhol’s work – but despite their iconic status, this is the first time the unprecedented archive has ever been on display under one roof.
